Why “Fresh Roasted” Coffee Doesn’t Mean Much (And What to Look For Instead)

Fresh roasted is one of the most familiar phrases in coffee, on bags, menus, and ads alike. It sounds like a promise, but here’s the catch: all coffee is fresh when it comes out of the roaster. It’s exactly why Oren has never been a fan of that saying. The question was never whether your coffee was fresh when it was roasted. It’s how long ago that was.

What Fresh Roasted Coffee Leaves Out

Coffee roasted in large volumes sit in warehouses, distribution centers, and on store shelves for weeks or months before anyone buys it. It was fresh once. By the time it reaches your cup, it’s not so fresh anymore. Roasted coffee loses aroma and flavor over time as its natural oils break down. The gap between the roaster and your kitchen matters more than any word on the label.

Our Freshness 24 Guarantee

At Oren’s, we roast to order. Every bag leaves our roaster no more than a day after it’s roasted, so that it actually reaches you while the beans are still fresh.

That thinking goes back to the beginning. When Oren was choosing his first roaster, he picked one that handled three kilos per batch. Small batches meant he could carry more types of coffee without any of them going stale.

How to Tell If Your Coffee Is Actually Fresh

Look for a roast date. Be skeptical of brands that say fresh without saying when. A “best by” date tells you when the seller wants it gone. A roast date tells you when it was made. That’s the proof, and it’s printed on every bag of Oren’s.

Taste It for Yourself

Great coffee starts with great beans, but even the best beans fade when they sit for too long. The shorter the trip from our roaster to your home, the more flavor makes it into your cup. Browse everything we’re roasting here.

Once a bag lands in your kitchen, how long does it usually last? Tell us in the comments.
